Have you ever met a friend at a coffee shop and found the background noise so overwhelming that you wanted to just leave and have your conversation somewhere else? Have you ever been to a swimming pool where you could hear everything all at once, and the noise bounced off the walls so much that you almost got a migraine? How about a restaurant or club where the reverberant sound of the pumping music and all the voices around made it impossible to connect with the person you’re with? There are so many places all around us with sound that interferes with our lives and wellbeing, but there’s always a mystery about acoustics and how to fix a problematic space. At House of Stone we are dedicated to developing and designing the best environment for sound in any space to improve the effectiveness and quality of how we live. Designing to achieve optimal room acoustics has benefits for any room and its function. It can improve the quality of sound recording, increase productivity in offices and workplaces, it can have health benefits for teachers and learning benefits for students in classrooms, it can make business meetings more effective in board rooms, going to restaurants or cafes more pleasant and enjoyable, staying at hotels better for privacy and restful sleep, and so many more possibilities. Traditional room and building design for aesthetics and functionality is important, but it is at least equally as important to factor in designing for sound. We can do so much more to improve how we live; it’s time to start designing for our ears.
Projects HOS Has Been Working On
This past year has been an exciting one at HOS Acoustics. We were involved with a large stage acoustic dampening project at Living Hope Alliance in Regina. The rolling custom panels we built worked so well at dampening the sound that the need to treat the walls is now low in the priority list! Success. At GoodSeed in Olds our task was to remove the unwanted Concrete truck and machine noise from the neighbouring plant from getting into the multimedia recording space. After careful testing and thorough design, the room has now achieved its goal and recording can go on uninterrupted. At Emerald West we were brought in as consultants at their recording studio to tame room nodes. On the Penthouse floor of Bossi Construction in downtown Calgary, we did acoustical treatment in hexagon suspended tiles as well as a complete custom recording studio/DJ booth. And at Crew Club Athletics we are tasked with taming the extreme echoing happening during the rowing classes in their large 3000 sq ft space. That project begins this month. Lots on the go, and much more to come!
